Maharashtra today is celebrating the beginning New Year 2024 i.e Gudi Padwa 2024. Happy Gudi Padwa 2024. The festival of Gudi Padwa, also known as Ugadi, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, or Cheti Chand, derives its name from 'gudi' which is the flag of Lord Brahma and 'padwa' which is the first day of the phase of the moon. Gudi Padwa is a Hindu festival, which states the marking of start of new year of the Marathi and Konkani HIndus. During Gudi Padwa, gudi (or gudhi) are arranged at every household. It is a bright, colorful silk scarf-like cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo. On top of it, one or more boughs of neem and mango leaves are attached with a garland of flowers. It is capped with a silver, bronze, or copper pot (handi or kalash), signifying victory or achievement. Why is Gudi Padwa Celebrated? As per the Hindu calendar, Gudi Padwa falls on the first day of the Chaitra month, which is usually in March or April. The day holds a multifaceted significance rooted in mythology, culture, and agricultural practices. One of the prominent legends associated with Gudi Padwa is the victorious return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, marking the culmination of his 14-year exile. People commemorate this event by hoisting Gudi, a decorated bamboo stick adorned with vibrant fabrics, neem leaves, and a sugar garland, symbolising victory and prosperity. Additionally, Gudi Padwa marks the commencement of the harvesting season, signifying abundance and prosperity in agricultural endeavours.
